Aerodynamicsthe ultimate discipline of road bike development

In high-performance road bike engineering, aerodynamics is no longer a mere footnote but the decisive factor that determines victory or defeat. It is the invisible force that significantly influences your performance—not just in sprints, but already at moderate speeds.

Every passionate racing cyclist knows: from 20 km/h the air resistance on a flat stretch becomes the dominant braking factor. It outperforms rolling resistance, bearing friction and even drive influences. This means unequivocally: superior aerodynamics give you Directly measurable advantageswhether you're travelling at 20 km/h in training, 25 km/h in the Gruppetto or 40 km/h at race speed. It is efficiency that converts your energy into pure propulsion.

But reality shows: true aerodynamic advances are an engineering masterpiece. The hurdles are immense, even for the biggest players in the industry. A look at established brands highlights the challenge:

  • The Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8, touted as an all-rounder, managed to improve aerodynamics by only 1 watt compared to its predecessor, the SL7.
  • For the new Canyon Aeroad, no improvement was detected in the wind tunnel (measured on the entire bike according to Tour Magazine 8/24) — a clear sign of stagnation in this highly competitive field.

IKARUS FASTER – 203.6 watts of aerodynamics that objectively impress.

We don’t rely on marketing claims, but on independent, scientifically validated testing. The FASTER was tested according to the strict wind tunnel protocol of the renowned Tour Magazine – using a realistic simulation with a moving leg dummy at 45 km/h.

The result: aerodynamics at an absolute top level, with 203.6 watts confirmed by objective measurements that leave no room for doubt. We tested the FASTER with a wide range of wheelsets and tire variants. In every configuration, it delivered excellent aero values that position it on par with or even ahead of numerous more expensive top-tier aero models from other manufacturers. The IKARUS FASTER is proof that uncompromising aerodynamics are not empty promises, but a measurable reality.

The wind tunnel tests, following the Tour Magazin protocol, were conducted with a leg dummy at 45 km/h. The measured value was aerodynamic drag in watts – the lower, the better. To ensure fair comparison, only race bikes with front wheels featuring 40–50 mm rim depth were included. A taller front wheel (60–65 mm) typically saves about 1.5–2 watts, while the rear wheel has minimal effect. Single chainring drivetrains offer an aerodynamic advantage of approximately 2–3 watts, so only bikes with double chainrings (i.e., two chainrings and a front derailleur) were considered

Weight – The ruthless truth of performance

Weight (measured without pedals and bottle cage, in kg)

When the road climbs, there are no excuses. On the mountain, gravity dominates, and every single gram becomes a direct opponent. Here, weight determines energy loss and thus your speed. Weight is the most honest metric in cycling technology – incorruptibly measurable and immediately and unmistakably felt while riding.

The IKARUS FASTER is the result of thoughtful weight optimization that goes far beyond the frame. With a frame weight of just 750 g (size M, unpainted) and a fork around 340 g, it already makes a clear statement. But true engineering mastery reveals itself in the system weight: complemented by an ultralight seatpost (approx. 160 g) and an integrated cockpit (approx. 255 g), we achieve complete weights that are unmatched in this performance class.

Faster AL = 6.45 kg (M) with DT Swiss wheelset (V50/H62 mm) – delivering an impressive 203.6 watts of aerodynamic performance.

Faster SL = 6.15 kg (M) with IKARUS wheelset (V+H50 mm, 29 mm tires) – delivering 206.2 watts of aerodynamic performance.

Starting at a sensational 5.8 kg (M) in the lightest configuration (35 mm rims, 28 mm tires).

Lightweight construction without compromise: the impossible made possible.

Here lies the true revolution of the FASTER. Despite this phenomenally low weight, it remains uncompromisingly aerodynamic and stiff. This is no given, but an extremely rare combination in the world of road bikes. While many aero bikes inevitably end up significantly heavier and dedicated climbing bikes have to make compromises in aerodynamics, the FASTER offers both in perfection: as light as a purebred climber, as fast as an uncompromising aero bike. It is the ultimate answer to the question of the true all-rounder.

Stiffness – The precision of power transfer

Stiffness is the backbone of every performance, but only where it truly matters. With the IKARUS FASTER, we focus on the critical points: the bottom bracket and head tube. A specially tuned carbon layup using high-modulus Toray T1100 carbon fibers – the finest in the world – unfolds its tangible advantages here:

  • Explosive power transfer: Your energy is catapulted from the pedal to the rear wheel. Every watt is converted into uncompromising forward momentum.
  • Precise handling: A stiff head tube is your direct connection to the road. It guarantees immediate feedback and excellent control, even at high speeds or during aggressive cornering.

The sleek, aerodynamic shape of the FASTER places immense demands on structural integrity. Through intensive prototyping and meticulous analysis, we have perfected the carbon layup to deliver an outstanding balance of weight, stiffness, and comfort. Our philosophy is clear: Not too much – just right. The IKARUS FASTER remains controlled, efficient, and comfortable on every terrain under all conditions.

Geometry & Handling: Your direct connection to the road

The IKARUS FASTER combines precision and fit in a sporty, balanced geometry that enables an aerodynamic, efficient riding position—never extreme, always confidently controllable. With up to 32 mm tire clearance, it remains flexible for any terrain, from racing to training rides. Every component is tuned to minimize vibrations while maintaining stiffness. The result: maximum control, less fatigue, and more speed on long distances.

Individual fit: Performance knows no gender—only fit.

We reject gender marketing. Every IKARUS FASTER is meticulously tailored to your individual body structure, riding style, and intended use. Because we know: true performance doesn’t come from categories, but from the perfect connection between rider and machine.

Quality Control & Safety

A racing bike must not only be fast, lightweight, and efficient—but above all safe and reliable. The IKARUS Faster frame undergoes a comprehensive series of tests and inspections that go beyond the applicable ISO standards.

On specialized test rigs, the frame, fork, handlebar, and seatpost are tested under realistic conditions and stringent limits for torsional stiffness, endurance, and material fatigue. Only components that meet our high standards go on sale. This way, you can rely on your Faster in every situation—whether sprinting, descending, or racing.

Our manufacturing partners in Asia are among the world’s leading carbon specialists and possess decades of experience in producing high-quality carbon frames.

Technical Detailsthought through down to the smallest detail

With the IKARUS FASTER, every detail is a deliberate decision. Our design principles are not based on fleeting trends, but on an unwavering foundation of functionality, ease of maintenance, and true performance. Because what really matters in training, competition, or epic tours is one overarching maxim: reliability without compromise.

Bottom bracket BSA: proven technology – superior reliability.

We rely on what has proven itself in practice: the BSA threaded bottom bracket. It is lightweight, absolutely reliable, and guarantees a noise-free riding experience. Alternative systems like T47 are often heavier, and press-fit bearings, while very light, are notoriously prone to creaking noises.

Seat clamp: integrated, accessible, repairable.

Top access: Easily reachable, protected against corrosion, and simple to operate.
Better than clamps from below or behind: While these may look sleek, they are often inaccessible for repairs or prone to corrosion.

Headset: stable, compatible.

No recessed spacer: a wider bearing distance reduces forces on the frame and fork steerer. Universal spacer interface: facilitates replacement with handlebars from other manufacturers.

Handlebar-stem unit: perfect integration, precisely tailored to you.

Our handlebar-stem unit offers complete integration for maximum visual and aerodynamic benefits. Each unit is individually selected to fit your measurements, making a later, often costly replacement unnecessary.

Axles: recessed, yet repairable.

For good reason, we deliberately avoid closed threads: they are hardly repairable in case of damage and offer no aerodynamic advantages. Our choice stands for ease of use, safety, and long-term reliability.

UDH derailleur hanger: the standard of the future.

The UDH derailleur hanger (Universal Derailleur Hanger) is our forward-looking standard: compatible, precise, globally available, and essential for cutting-edge drivetrains like SRAM’s 1×13 systems.

Purchase Decision: Criteria for Performance Road Bikes Compared

When purchasing a performance road bike, various criteria play a crucial role. We highlight the key factors to help you make your decision:

1. Aerodynamics Aerodynamics is the most demanding aspect of road bike development and often the decisive factor for speed. Rely solely on independent tests, not vague manufacturer claims. The aerodynamics test conducted by Tour Magazin is considered the most realistic and informative for evaluating the aerodynamic performance of different manufacturers.

2. Weight The weight of a road bike is immediately noticeable and easy to verify. A lower weight requires the use of high-quality components, which is often reflected in the price—sometimes exponentially. Keep in mind that some manufacturer specifications may be exaggerated. We transparently state our weights without pedals, bottle cages, or computer mounts, in line with the measurements of Tour Magazin (for size M or L).

3. Frame Stiffness Frame stiffness is important, but most modern carbon frames provide sufficient values. What matters is not maximum stiffness, but stiffness in the right areas—such as the bottom bracket and head tube—combined with some flex in the seatpost and handlebars for riding comfort. These values are measured in Tour Magazin’s tests. Be critical of purely subjective assessments from so-called bike testers, as they are often contradictory.

4. Handling & Geometry The geometry of modern performance road bikes shows only minor differences. Many manufacturers try to score points here with imaginative advantages where measurable criteria are lacking. In practice, stem length, handlebar width, saddle height, and tire width already have a strong impact on a bike’s handling. Focus on the right frame size, stem, and handlebar width; the geometry itself is usually unproblematic.

5. Custom Options Many put too much emphasis on appearance rather than function when it comes to performance road bikes. While we do offer aesthetic customization options, our clear focus is on functional performance. With the IKARUS Faster, you have a wide range of options available—something most competitors can’t match, as they often offer little more than color choices. Discover all options here:

6. Consultation & Support The importance of consultation and support depends on your own level of knowledge. If you are very experienced and can handle all repairs yourself, this point may carry less weight. With IKARUS, you benefit from extensive personal consultation, fast email support, as well as repair and service options for our bikes.

7. Safety & Quality Bikes from all reputable manufacturers, including IKARUS, are tested according to recognized ISO standards. Although rare, material defects in handcrafted carbon frames can never be completely ruled out. IKARUS has had no such cases to date but is aware of the possibility. As a consumer, you can expect very safe products from all well-known manufacturers and from IKARUS.

Important note: The "UCI approved" sticker on frames only confirms that the shape and geometry comply with the regulations for UCI races, not product safety. The UCI does not conduct safety tests. We choose not to pursue this certification, which costs over 5,000 CHF, as it is only relevant for UCI races and our frames already meet UCI requirements.

8. Appearance
The best bike is worthless if you don’t like how it looks. If the IKARUS bikes don’t suit your taste, don’t buy them. It’s best to see them in person and compare with other models. Brochure photos can often be misleading.
